What the browser-based ThreeJS Assets Studio is — three creative tools (animate, model, build) that run entirely in your browser, free with an account, and stream the threejsassets catalog into every tool.

ThreeJS Assets Studio is a browser-based creative suite at studio.threejsassets.com. It bundles three tools — Character, Editor, and Map Builder — in one workspace, with the threejsassets catalog available while you work. Nothing installs. Imported models and local projects stay in your browser unless you deliberately save a project to cloud sync.

The three tools#

The Studio's header exposes three modes, and switching between them keeps you in the same tab and account. Character and Editor share the cross-tool asset shelf; Map replaces it with a map-specific shelf containing the assets you can place.

  • Character — pose and key a 65-bone Mixamo-compatible rig with IK, L↔R mirroring, and onion skins; work in a dope sheet and curve editor with per-key easing, sequences, and additive layers; build characters with the Character Creator; export clips and rig+mesh GLBs that play in a stock THREE.GLTFLoader.
  • Editor — build low-poly assets from primitives, palette paint, and a modifier stack; import and inspect any GLB; convention linting keeps your models pack-ready for the catalog look; export GLB.
  • Map Builder — paint worlds with layers, brushes, auto-tiling roads, and a live triangle budget; place owned and free library assets while browsing locked pack previews; export the whole map as a GLB or a JSON + manifest bundle.

A bare studio.threejsassets.com lands on the Home dashboard, not a tool — pick a project or start a new one from there. A deep link that names a mode (#/character, #/editor, #/map) still opens that tool directly.

What every tool shares#

The three editors are different surfaces over one platform, so a handful of capabilities are the same everywhere:

  • Live asset library — the threejsassets catalog streams into every tool. Free assets are always available; packs you own unlock in place. See using the asset library.
  • Autosave and undo everywhere — projects persist locally in your browser, and every editor keeps a bounded undo/redo history for the current editing session.
  • Command palette — press the palette shortcut to search and run commands registered by the shell and tools you have opened. Press ? outside a text field for the shortcut-bearing command list; Editor and Map also have pane-specific keys.
  • Customer perks — pack and lifetime owners get extras like saved presets, batch export, and cloud sync. See your account & customer perks.
  • Scriptable — advanced users can inspect and run registered commands through window.studio. Project lifecycle actions work across all three tools; Character also exposes keying, selection, and playback controls. See Scripting & automation for the limits.

Free, with account or license-key access#

The tools are free to work in — there is no Studio subscription or separate Studio product to buy. The normal route is the same account you use on the threejsassets store: sign in once and you're signed in to both. Signed-out visitors see a landing page and are routed to the site to sign in or create a free account, which sends them back to the Studio afterward. Customers can also enter with a valid TJA_ license key, but key-only access does not provide account identity, cloud projects, or account perks. Full walkthrough in signing in & your projects.

Buying packs or the lifetime license still happens on the store, not in the Studio. Owning packs unlocks more of the asset library inside the tools and turns on the customer perks.

One exception is worth naming up front: in the Character Creator, building, editing and animating a character is free, but the two deliverables — the exported .glb and the source bundle — need that character product on your account. See the Character Creator.

Public beta — save often#

The Studio is in public beta. The first time you sign in, a welcome notice sets three expectations, and they're worth keeping in mind:

  • Public beta — you're one of the first people in the Studio, and some tools are still being built.
  • Things may not work as expected — features can misbehave or change without notice. Save often, and don't rely on it for anything critical yet.
  • Access and availability may change — which features are available, and to whom, is still evolving as the product takes shape.

Your work autosaves locally as you go, but during beta it's wise to export important projects and animations rather than trusting the app to hold them.

Requirements#

The Studio is a desktop-browser experience and needs WebGL. There is nothing to download or install — open the URL in a modern desktop browser and sign in. Because everything runs client-side, your imported models and works-in-progress stay in your browser unless you explicitly export them or (as a customer) opt a project into cloud sync.
